This artifact was donated to the Museum four years ago. It was found among the contents of one of Bathurst's oldest homes, Joe Doucet's home that eventually became the florists shop known as "Oliver's Gardens". A plaque was placed on this home several years ago and when it was sold and remained florist shop under a local owner, the Oliver family left Bathurst for the West. Some time later when the Olivers were closing their property in BC they discovered this "Intercolonial Railway Baggage Tag" in an old trunk which originally came from Bathurst and belonged to Joe Doucet and was used as the railway tag in the town of Bathurst. The late Mrs. Oliver thought it belonged in Bathurst and forwarded it to the Museum where it is displayed inside a brass shadow box frame.

Book Inscription

This inscription is situated inside a book of sonnets which was written by Sir Charles G. D. Roberts entitled "Songs of the Common Day". The book of sonnets was written over an 11 year period, from 1882 - 1893 and describe life in rural New Brunswick where the author was raised. Sir Charles G. D. Roberts was considered to be the leader and predominant member of the "Confederation Poets" until his death in 1943. This inscription was made to J.M. O'Brien, a Bathurst entrepeneur as a Christmas gift in 1893, prior to the knighting of Roberts. They had attended college together.

Sir James Hamet Dunn

Sir James Hamet Dunn was born on October 29th, 1874 in the village of St. Peter's near Bathurst, New Brunswick. At the end of the 19th century, Dunn had established himself as an extremely successful financier and industrialist. His exploits not only made an impact on Canada but in England as well. In 1921, Dunn was knighted by King George of England due to his wartime efforts for the British Empire during WWI.
For the event of Sir James Hamet Dunn's knighting he had a London tailor make for him a special suit which is now on display at the Bathurst Museum. The jacket is of particular interest since it is styled after a tail-coat which gained popularity at the beginning of the 19th century. This type of coat is distinguished by the central closure of fancy buttons along with a collar and reveres buttoned high on the chest. Since this is a single-breasted jacket, it is cut away in the front in a sloping line at the hips with a long tail which reaches to behind the knees in the back. Though the popularity of this style of coat diminished during the late 19th century, this type of attire remains popular even today for formal occasions.
